A West Point graduate and Vietnam Veteran, Dr. Galak is an Alumnus of New York Medical College. While in New York, he spent time at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitative Medicine at New York University. At the Rusk Institute he learned about alternative approaches to pain management, treating patients who had multiple failed back surgeries. During his residency, he worked with veterans, helping them deal with PTSD and substance abuse issues. He trained in psychotherapy with Dr. George Vaillant of Harvard and Dr. James Masterson of Cornell.Dr. Galak studied hypnotherapy with Dr. Herbert Spiegel from Columbia University and Dr. Emmett Miller a pioneer in the area of mind-body medicine. Dr. Galak then began to work with the use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to treat various medical conditions.
He has been the Medical Director of a drug treatment facility in Palm Springs area and a consultant at the Betty Ford Center. While at the Betty Ford Center, he provided psychiatric evaluations and was frequently called upon to help with the detoxification of difficult patients. Dr. Galak helped develop a free standing hospital from the early planning stages, an outpatient pain treatment center, and he worked to establish a multidisciplinary team to treat cancer patients. He has served as Chief of Staff and Medical Director of several hospitals and is a graduate of Seattle University School of Law, Cum Laude.
Dr. Galak began practicing Integral Yoga in 1971 and has studied martial arts for over 40 years, holding black belts in several disciplines. He incorporates alternative and complementary medicine in his treatment approach. He believes in mind-body medicine and that the focus on healing should be on the body's own internal healing mechanisms in conjunction with modern medicine. Nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction are all emphasized. Dr. Galak treats adolescents to seniors. He specializes in mood disorders, anxiety, pain management and substance abuse. He is a member of the Endocrine Society, an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Washington, Harborview Medical Center and is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. He also is available to treat patients in Rancho Mirage, California.
